With the recent confirmation of Judge Sonia Sotomayor, the relationship between the American public and the Supreme Court is once again on the front burner. In The Will of the People, Friedman challenges the notion that Supreme Court judges do not face accountability for their decisions since they hold their office for life and are appointed rather than face election. He argues that the Court, which has ruled definitively on such issues as abortion, school prayer, and military tribunals in the War on Terror, has always been subject to a higher power: the American public. Friedman will be joined in conversation about his book by Edward J. McCaffery. McCaffery is the Robert C. Packard Trustee Chair in Law
Professor of Law, Economics and Political Science and Visiting Professor of Law and Economics at the California Institute of Technology.
