Description

How many different ways can a person be encouraged to give his or her best and never quit? Historical icons such as Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King, Jr., Ronald Reagan, Vince Lombardi and John Wooden are celebrated not only for their extraordinary accomplishments, but for their eloquent words and phrases that inspired others to greatness.
Rod Dedeaux also inspired success in his own charismatic and dynamic way. As head baseball coach at the University of Southern California for 45 years, he led the Trojans to a record 11 national championships and 28 conference titles. Dedeaux helped develop such future major league stars as Tom Seaver, Fred Lynn, Mark McGwire, Randy Johnson, Dave Kingman, Ron Fairly and Don Buford.
In his book, Never Make the Same Mistake Once -one of Dedeaux s signature sayings - Robert Leach looks back at the lessons learned from a true legend, how he has applied those lessons to his own career as a successful teacher and former coach, and how anyone can benefit from these words of wisdom on the field and off.

Praise for Never Make the Same Mistake Once…

The mold was literally broken when Rod Dedeaux came along. He was truly one of a kind, the most unique person any who came in contact with him ever had the privilege of knowing. His success as the head baseball coach at USC is the stuff of legends, but if you didn't have the opportunity to play for him it would be difficult to appreciate one of his absolutely greatest traits: the ability to motivate and create a culture of optimism and confidence to win and succeed against any odds. Former USC baseball players are virtually unanimous in their proclamation that the time spent as a Trojan under Rod was the best time of their athletic lives.
Bob Leach has succeeded in capturing the magic of Rod Dedeaux in his book. This was no-small challenge, because Rod Dedeaux was bigger than life and Bob has created an easy read in describing the giant personality and history of #1. (There s only one #1, Rod s uniform number). Baseball fans of all ages will enjoy reading the story of one of this country's greatest sports figures. --Mike Gillespie UC Irvine head baseball coach, Former USC head baseball coach, 1987-2006
