Ruth Anne “Bone” Boatwright is born into the most notorious family in her rural South Carolina community. Her mother, Anney, as well as her aunts and uncles try their hardest to give Bone a happy childhood despite their poverty and outcast status, and to instill in her a sense of dignity---Anney’s ongoing battle to remove the stamp of “Bastard” from Bone’s birth certificate is just one example. Life in the Boatwright family has never been easy but when Anney marries the sweet-talking and hot-tempered Daddy Glen, Bone is faced with a whole new—and troubling---adversary.

Grandma is always on her knees in the dirt with her gardening gloves on. Her home brims with plants and blossoms, and on hot days, she waters her granddaughter, her “most special flower of all,” with the garden hose. But a day comes when Grandma is no longer there to care for the little girl, who feels sad and small and alone until she remembers all that her grandmother taught her - and all that she now has to teach. Full of light and life and the solace of green growing things, this moving picture book explores a universal rite of passage with warmth and joy.
