For women, the estimated combined number of new cases and deaths from breast cancer in the U.S. totaled in the 100,000's in 2008 alone. That is a staggering statistic that is frightening to all. When Jessica Queller's mother succumbed to cancer, Jessica had herself tested for the BRCA breast cancer gene mutation. The results came back positive, putting her at a terrifyingly elevated risk of developing cancer at some point in her lifetime. At age 34 she was left with the options of continual screening and eventually fighting the cancer when it occurred or going with the drastic alternative of getting a double mastectomy before cancer developed.
