Beware the man who rides the shoulders of heroes with a closed mind. Beware the Bene Gesserit who's mind is so open she doesn't see the trouble closest to her. And beware the Sister who's mind is open only to revenge. The war against the machines has been over for eight decades and mankind seems to be forgetting the terror of being ruled by these horrors. Even the Bene Gesserits use computers in secret. But the Butlerian movement will not let anyone forget and has set out to destroy all who prefer using machines. Vorian Atreides has turned his back on politics in hope for peace. But there are still those who would find him either to eliminate or try to get him to join in ruling as the machines intended. Naturally the Butlerians would have him dead. This is a brilliant novel of horrible extremes fighting each other with most of humanity in the center of the storm. Manford and his Butlerian followers could throw the entire human race into total chaos and a new dark ages. Herbert and Anderson have done a magnificent job of keeping the tradition of great sci fi in the continuing saga of Dune.

Raymond Chandler's Los Angeles: In a Lonely Place
(Bus tour)
Saturday, October 11, noon - 4pm
$65.00 per person (plus tax)
Bungalows. Crime. Hollywood. Blondes. Vets. Smog. Death.
This was Raymond Chandler's Los Angeles, which resonated from deft and melancholy fits of his writer's bow. Join us as we go down the mean streets that shaped his fiction, and that in turn shaped his hard-boiled times, in a four hour tour of downtown, Hollywood and surrounding environs: Musso & Frank, Union Station, the Hotel Van Nuys, Paramount Studio's gates, and much, much more. Through published work, private correspondence, screenplays and film adaptations, we trace Chandler's search for meaning and his anti-hero Philip Marlowe's struggle not to be pigeonholed or give anything less than all he has, which led them both down the rabbit hole of isolation, depression, and drink.
The bus will leave at noon sharp. Check-in at 11am in the Vroman's parking lot. Please be on time. Food and drink are permitted and suggested; no audio or videotaping without permission. This event was a sold out hit the first time we hosted it! Seating is limited so call us today to sign up! (626) 449-5320.
