Absolutely my favorite book in the whole world, and one I never tire of recommending! True love, battles to the death, daring chases, sword fights, wrestling giants, pirates, killer spiders -- this book is non-stop action, and extremely funny to boot. The movie is entertaining, but the novel is far superior. Not to love it is . . . inconceivable.

This children's debut from Jane Smiley takes place on a horse ranch in the mid-1960s. Seventh grader Abby Lovitt has always been more at ease with horses - Jewels (mares) and Georges (geldings), as her father insists they call them - especially with stress at school and at home. However, there is one gelding that gives her trouble: the dark brown bay, the horse who won't meet her gaze, who bucks her right off, and the horse her father makes her train and ride every day. Abby could cross her stern father by refusing to ride the Ornery George, but at what cost?
