In the valleys and mountains of the Ozarks, a young boy dreams of raising and training two ‘coon hounds’. This is a book apparently read by nine year olds, but it should not be confined to that audience. I found this book terrific in my mid-twenties, and again in my mid-thirties. The integrity and loyalty shown by the main characters is moving, and growing up in and around nature sounds ideal.
Marlantes, a former marine who was awarded the Navy Cross in Vietnam, sets his debut novel in Quang-Tri Province, at an American fire-support base. The environment is painted in vivid, intense hues: the fog malevolent, the bugs and leeches constant torturers, and jungle rot universal. The enemy is always near and often unseen until firefights explode with shocking savagery. Examining both the internal and external struggles of the battalion, the author brings a long, torturous war back to life with realistic characters and authentic, thrilling combat sequences.
