In Jackson, Mississippi, 1962, social injustice rages, awakening the consciousness of Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan, a white southern socialite fresh out of college. After landing a job as a household advice columnist, and determined to do more than write about the myriad uses of Crisco, Skeeter enlists her friends' maids to write about the daily life of a black maid. Together they uncover the disdain and love that coexists in their relationships, friendship that crosses the lines of race, and of class and age as the momentous events of the civil rights movement unfolds.
