This is such a wonderfully simple story that perfectly represents a sense of naivete of the word. The illustrations perfectly communicate the sense of hope, eagerness and frustration in the baby birds voice.

I liked this book, it was original & I think the author did a good job of showing why Henry was having trouble deciding if the world was worth saving. The aliens had given him the choice & from his point of view, because of unfortunate experiences, the world kind of really sucks. But Henry was able to take other people’s points of view into account as well. This is a good book and I suggest it!

Jumping between hand written memoirs and a film-script format, Monster follows Steve Harmon, an African American teenager, on trial for robbery and murder. Mixed with the occasional image, I’ve never seen a book in this format that deals so well with the ideas of race, peer pressure, masculinity, identity, and truth as a teenage boy. Monster will pull you in and make you think, like any good silver screen psychological thriller!

I’ve grown up sharing this book with my mom and hope you can do the same. This beautiful story follows a young man as he travels through childhood and into adulthood, followed by his mothers song. “I’ll love you forever. I’ll love you for always. As long as I’m living, My baby you’ll be.” The ending is touching and shows how lasting a parent’s love can be.

Gene perfectly blends in classic superhero origin with socio-cultural Asian American history, and original continuity to deliver one of the most original comics in the past decade. This story never lulls in its delivery, it is constantly transitioning from excitement to romance, from humor to tragedy to intrigue mystery. I honestly can’t recommend this enough!

Mabel is possibly the naughtiest dog in the entire universe. She doesn’t mean to be, it just sort of happens. In fact, she just recently learned what the word meant! Still, her parents adore her. However, when they throw an adult-only party, will she be able to control herself, or will Naughty Mabel once again rule the Hamptons?

This is an outrageously funny story that I couldn’t help but love. It is also a fantastic read aloud, especially when you try out some fun accents!

Uproariously funny, Denton Little’s Deathdate is a must for anyone in the mood to smile and roll their eyes at a completely clueless but well-meaning teen boy just trying to get by on the day of his predetermined death. While the book mostly reads like realistic fiction, the sci-fi twist is that scientists have discovered a way to determine each citizen’s death date. Denton has always known his end will come on the day of his senior prom, he just doesn’t know when exactly. But before he can get around to his unfortunate demise, he has to figure out whether or not his girlfriend dumped him, why he’s in his friend’s sister’s bed the day of his funeral, and how exactly will he die – car crash, homicide, government conspiracy, purple splotch? – all while keeping his stepmom happy. Be ready to root for Denton to get through his self-eulogy and grand gestures in one piece!

This is my favorite yet from Rebecca Stead! The story unfolds from three different perspectives: Bridge, a seventh grader who is trying to find her place in middle school while her two best friends are also finding theirs; an unnamed high school student who is skipping class on Valentine’s Day; and Sherm, who writes letters to his grandfather who has recently moved out. This quiet, introspective story explores the nature of who we are now versus who we were or could be, as well as how that changes our relationships with the people we love. There is a lot to discuss in Goodbye Stranger, and it would make a perfect choice for middle school book clubs…or even best friends who all want to share a book.

As with Katherine Rundell’s previous books, The Wolf Wilder features an incredible heroine who is strong, empathetic and yes, a little wild. Feo and her mother are wolf wilders in snowy pre-Lenin Russia. They take wolves who have been held captive as rich people’s pets and teach them how to be wild again, an occupation that is not appreciated by the villainous General Rakor. Feo understands wolves much better than people and her relationship with them is the beautiful beating heart of this book, but we also get to experience her growing friendship with a surprising soldier.

All the World is one of the finest picture books I've ever read; it elevates the standards of storytelling for children to a new level.

A charming poem in the spirit of The Power of Now is lifted into the stratosphere by Marla Frazee's cinematic illustrations.

Frazee's wordless story about a family's get-together near the seashore runs parallel to the poem, and ingeniously illustrates the text. The layout and the pictures are packed with details that can be discovered, studied, and treasured by children and adults time and time again.

All the World is an excellent children's book, and many well be one of the best gift books of the 2009 Holiday Season.
