What is the meaning of life? Can that question be answered? What does it even mean to ask it? Is there a purpose to our human existence? In this little book, literature professor Terry Eagleton takes a look at these kinds of big questions and explores ways that we might approach them. The heaviness of the subject matter is balanced by the author’s humor and playfulness. It’s a very challenging but fun read and a great addition to the ‘very short introduction’ series.

Beneath the Lion's Gaze tells the story of an Ethiopian family caught in the bloody coup that deposed the Emperor. Hailu, the patriarch of the family and a successful doctor, becomes an instrument of torture, keeping prisoners alive long enough to be questioned fully. His sons deal with the revolution in very different ways- Yonas turns to prayer, while Dawit joins an underground resistance movement. A novel of tragedy, betrayal, and loyalty, Beneath the Lion's Gaze is a testament to the human ability to overcome enormous adversity.
