Cimorene is not your average princess (she’d rather fence, cook and clean than primp and embroider), Mendanbar is not your average king (he hates state functions), and Princess Morwen is not your average witch (she is young and pretty and none of her cats are black). These three wonderful characters and more star in Patricia Wrede’s funny, charming fairytale takeaways. This series is a sure hit with any reader that loves a good, quirky, funny and engaging read. 5 stars!

This incredible book combines science, politics, and above all impeccable writing to create one of the best non-fiction books I have ever read. Skloot spent 10 years researching the story of a poor southern black woman who died from cancer and her cells, which were taken without permission and have gone on to change the world. A must-read!

I loved everything about this book, except, perhaps, the title. Ms. Bloom delivers an exquisite collection of stories that invoked an avalanche of emotion in my cynical heart. A beautifully written collection, with the most evocative character sketching I have ever encountered. 10 of 10!

A charming book with a unique organization, this novel is great, light, clever reading. Thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish. Each of the characters (who also serve as the book's narrators) is well-rounded.

A stranger handed this book to me in an airport; how fitting, as this is a book about just that kind of chance encounter.  Eddie, upon reaching heaven due to unusual circumstances, meets a series of five people important in his life.  These five, a group Eddie never would have guessed help him find peace.  This book is surprising, smart and moving.  I was pleasantly surprised by this book.

In this book’s portrayal of anxiety run-amok the characterization is superb. Even better are the unique, multifaceted relations of events from the perspectives of these characters. Wonderful!

In this complex new mystery, Mosley leaves behind Los Angeles for the darker New York.  Leonid McGill, PI, is a fantastic, bizarre character:  the son of extreme radicals, entangled in a loveless marriage, parenting his illigitimate children and attempting to go straight.  But McGill can't escape his past, and in this fast-paced chaotic novel, it catches up to him with a vengeance.

This dark installment in Zola's famed Rougon-Macquart series focuses on the fractures in French society during industrialization.  Zola explodes the relationships between husband and wife, patron and beneficiary, boss and employee, restructuring them in maniacally disfigured ways.  An engrossing, disturbing, and beautifully crafted novel.

This story is many things: moving proto-feminist statement, personal depiction of mental illness, historical snapshot, and engrossing read. The story captures a female narrator’s decline in her meditations on the worn, disturbing wallpaper in her sickroom. I have read this book many times, and each reading leaves me with a different impression; a sure sign of an incredible classic.

A dark, dramatic and twisted story of love soured, love redeemed and love enduring. Far darker than Austen, and with more melodrama even that Jane Eyre, I found Wuthering Heights to be a delicious bridge to Victorian themes found in Shelly, Stevenson and Stoker. A classic to be read and enjoyed by everyone from fans of Pride and Prejudice to those who enjoyed Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Read it!

The best new fiction I have read in a long time. Viswanathan uses one extended family to flesh out the culture of India under British rule and during the country's nationalization. Powerful and lovely.
