This is it – the fantasy juggernaut that spawned much memorable lines as “You shall NOT PASS!” and “They’re taking the hobbits to Isengard!” and “One does not simply walk into Mordor.” Movie tie-in aside, though this is a seminal work and anyone who identifies with the fantasy genre owes it to themselves to read this modern epic. For extra street cred, read The Silmarillion, and then challenge Stephen Colbert to see who knows the most about Middle Earth, its myth, heroes, and fiends.

What if you could live life over again? And again? And again?” Jeff Winston, the hero of this compulsively readable novel, dies in the very first sentence...and wakes up in his 18-year-old body in his college dorm room, his memories of his just-ended life completely intact. Jeff ends up caught in an endlessly repeating life loop, never quite living the same life twice, and along the way, he realizes that he is not the only one replaying. A GREAT read!

So what's with the top hats, goggles, corsets, and waistcoats? Good, God, man! Get with the times (i.e. the faux Victorian Era), and up to snuff with one of the fastest-growing subcultures of geek chic. More than mere dress-up fandom, Steampunk encompasses literature, music, retro science, history and politics, as well as design, fashion, art, and crafts. The Steampunk Bible is a ripping good overview, filled with most excellent picto-graphics, for the novice as well as the veteran mad inventor/explorer/airship-traveler.

Set two years before Star Wars A New Hope, this book should be read by every Star Wards fan. The book tells a brilliant tale of one of Darth Vader’s apprentices and how the Rebel Alliance was started. It is also seasoned nicely with tidbits about Jedi who escaped Order 66 only to be hunted down by the apprentice.

This brilliant nine book series is set two years after the events of the Legacy of the Force series (which is set 40+ years after Star Wars A New Hope). The books are wonderfully true to the Star Wars universe and although there are lots of new characters, Luke, Leia and Han are still dramatically present. The series follows multiple plot lines that intertwine but all revolve around the Jedi Order struggling against the government, the fallout from Jedi Jacen Solo's fall to the dark side, and a new Sith Order that has come to light. This series is a must read for Star Wars fans.

The series in order:
#1 Outcast by Aaron Allston
#2 Omen by Christie Golden
#3 Abyss by Troy Denning
#4 Backlash by Aaron Allston
#5 Allies by Christie Golden
#6 Vortex by Troy Denning
#7 Conviction by Aaron Allston
#8 Ascension by Christine Golden
#9 Apocalypse by Troy Denning

This is a slick collection of well written short stories, some of which have been turned into movies. “The Body” – Stand by Me in movie form – is my personal favorite. “Apt Pupil” – an ultra creepy story about a 13 year old boy who discovers that a neighbor is more than just a quiet old man: he was a former nazi, who butchered and tortured. The boy becomes obsessed, forcing the man to tell him about the horrors of concentration camps and his evil past. The boy fantasizes about all of it, enjoying every detail.

This is an amazing book. Actually it’s more than a book, it an heirloom that has been passed down over the years from one Jedi to another and now resides in a beautiful case. It is a manual for students of the Force. Every Star Wars fan from young to old should have this. It is brilliantly designed and packaged and contains notations from Yoda, Anakin, Obi-Wan and Luke, just to name a few. This makes the perfect gift for the Jedi in your life. I absolutely love it.

This story begins with “Danny,” a normal guy in a normal life when out of nowhere random acts of violence begin to occur and gradually get worse as it turns into a pandemic of homicide. Danny locks himself and his family in their home to protect them all... but are they safe from one another? Kill or be killer, hate or be hated in a world taken over by rampant rage and paralyzing paranoia. David Moody is an absorbing, brooding writer that drags you through the grisly new reality in chilling detail. Over all, this is a captivating book that is a timely treatise on how facile it is to alienate and turn on one another due to fear. Also recommend his zombie novel “Autumn”... very creepy and sick.

Many think the future will be ruled by corporations. Not just here but world wide. There will be no true countries only competing huge businesses. The Kollins have taken it much further than that. Each human is incorporated from birth. They spend  many years trying to obtain more shares in themselves. They sell shares  to get money for school and then hope for a good paying job so they can buy them back and perhaps some day obtain a majority. Into this relatively successful society comes Justin Cord. Awakened from cryogenic sleep after 300 years he is the only human anywhere not incorporated. And he doesn't want to be. He looks upon it as a form of slavery rather than freedom. And what happens when you throw a monkey wrench into a smooth running engine? Chaos. This is a well thought out and original work of fiction that may be just a bit too real for some. There are arguments that can be made both for and against this kind of society; valid arguments. Could something like this really happen? Could this be our future? Maybe – maybe not. But it certainly does make for some great reading.

A Peter Pan retelling for adults. This book reveals Peter’s origins, his evolving motives behind creating the “Lost Boys”, and the uncomfortable facts behind his past and the pasts of his enemies and friends. From a commonly dangerous present-day New York to a chaotic, diseased, and war-torn Neverland, Peter maintains the carefree, reckless attitude we’ve come to expect, but is accompanied by a much darker, mature, and oddly enough, appropriate side. Gruesome, bloody, and sexual at times, this book is a fantastic read for anyone who enjoys alternate and/or unsanitized fairytales; the kin that were once prevalent in the Western Word or were exports from the Black Forest.

One of my favorite King stories and one I always recommend. The story; a couple decide to rekindle their marriage in a remote cabin in the woods. Bondage occurs then one of them dies leaving the other bound, alone, naked and with no way to escape. Excellent read that takes you through the pain of being restrained while you spouse’s dead body rots on the floor next to you.
