This is a slick collection of well written short stories, some of which have been turned into movies. “The Body” – Stand by Me in movie form – is my personal favorite. “Apt Pupil” – an ultra creepy story about a 13 year old boy who discovers that a neighbor is more than just a quiet old man: he was a former nazi, who butchered and tortured. The boy becomes obsessed, forcing the man to tell him about the horrors of concentration camps and his evil past. The boy fantasizes about all of it, enjoying every detail.

Fowler, the NY Times-bestselling author of The Jane Austen Book Club, has created a sharp-witted & brilliant new novel that trails 29-year-old Rima as she settles into the CA home of her godmother (and world-famous mystery writer) Addison Early. It's there that she wrestles with personal mysteries, including why Addison would've used her father as the villain in a novel, and whether a murder that he would've been responsible for actually happened.
