In The Wordy Shipmates, Vowell studies the Puritan effect, focusing especially on John Winthrop and Reverend John Cotton, the leading religious and civic figures of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, as well as it two most famous exiles, Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson.
