Although there is a biography of the original Rin Tin Tin woven throughout this book, it is really about the franchising of an ideal (both a film and through Rinty’s actual progeny) and how that ideal has influenced our relationship to our pets (now more often like members of our families rather than working animals). An interesting social commentary.
