Strip club owner Manco Kapak has been robbed by a masked gunman. Enraged, he sends his security men to find a suspect: someone spending cash fast, and new enough to Los Angeles not to realize he robbed a gangster. Joe Carver is that suspect, but not the actual thief; that dubious honor goes to Jefferson Falkins and his girlfriend Carrie. While Carver avoids capture and sets out to make Kapak pay, Falkins continues his robberies, journeying into territory that is increasingly strange and violent. As if that weren't enough, this complicated narrative also follows Lt. Nick Slosser, the detective in charge of the case, as he balances two secret marriages, each with kids approaching college. Perry deftly balances several engaging characters, pushing them to an ultimately satisfying conclusion.
