Lily is thrown into the bloody politics of the fairy court while trying to come to terms with her lineage and magical affinities. A variety cast of characters, transitions between the human and fae worlds, and Lily’s cautious steps into friendship and romance make this book a compelling read.

You wouldn’t think a girl with wings would be one of the most normal people in her family, but that’s the case for Ava Lavender. The story of Ava’s family (stretching back to her great-grandmother) quickly engages the reader with its mater-of-fact magical realism and syrupy prose.

This is a terrific book about knowing your own beauty no matter what and having the courage to challenge everyone else to recognize it too. Willowdean is a character who makes no apologies for who she is and when the Miss Teen Blue Bonnet pageant rolls around, she inspires a few unlikely candidates to enter the competition with the help of some Dolly Parton drag queens. I found this to be a thoughtfully written, quirky book with heroine who exudes confidence while still experiencing her own internal doubts.

However, much more comes of it than she ever expected. As their worlds collide, Marion fears that her secret, a secret she has held close to her for years, will destroy everything. What she doesn’t know, is that Kurt has a secret too, one that has kept him at an arm’s length away from everyone – even his best friend. As their secrets rise to the surface, Marion and Kurt wonder if they can reveal the things that have caused them the most pain. Ingrid Sundberg creates a tale that is tough and real, but also relieving and strengthening.

This was a beautiful story that made me laugh, cry, and smile. Samantha knows a lot of things about being the daughter of a politician. What she doesn’t know is how to live a life without plans—a life where she can do what she wants, as she pleases. After years of watching the large, chaotic, free-spirited Garrett Family next door, Sam is shocked when Jace Garrett climbs up her balcony and gives her the opportunity to experience a normal life. This story is similar to Romeo and Juliet in their forbidden romance and with Sam having to determine where her loyalties lie.

Drawn together on the ledge of the Bell Tower, Violet and Finch have more in common than either would have ever guessed. Reeling from her sister’s accidental death, Violet resets on phrases like “I’m not ready” and “extenuating circumstances” to get her through the few remaining days of high school. Constantly afraid of slipping into a dark mood, Theodore Finch marks his time “awake”, often shedding different looks – 80s Finch, Nerdy Finch, Badass Finch – and doing and saying things others don’t expect, which leads to his unfortunate nickname of “Theodore Freak”. But together they are wanders, they are Ultraviolet and deep blue holes, they are poetic lines and Jovian-Plutonian gravitational effects and they are lovely. Yes, there is sadness in this book but there is so much loveliness too and I promise Violet and Finch will not leave your heart after this story ends!

Insignia is awesome. I think of it as a faster, funny Ender’s Game, but it’s more than that. Tom isn’t good at much, but his skill at video games catches the eye of the government, so they put him into a program where teenagers have computer chips installed in their heads that allow them to fly spaceships just by thinking about it. As he and other teens train for space combat, they also form lasting friendships and make serious enemies… and they pull some stupid, hilarious pranks. As the series moves forward, look out for more action, more humor, and the start of revolution.

Wow. This might just be my favorite of Lisa McMann's books. Jules, the main character of the novel lives a completely normal life. That is unless you count having to drive a pizza truck to school to advertize your family’s business, or that fact that her dad suffers from depression and uses hoarding as an escape. Oh, and did I mention that she has been seeing the same terrible vision repeatedly that just happens to end with the love of her life in a body bag? McMann offers a wonderful mash up of thriller, mystery, science fiction, and modern day Romeo and Juliet romance with this book. I recommend it with the highest of praises.

By far one of the best books that I have read in a long time. I love the questions that this book raises about humanity and survival, as well as authority. Not only is it impossible to put down, it keeps you thinking for long after you have finished reading it.

The future of the United States has been transformed into a world called Panem-a place divided into 12 districts & a capitol. Each year they hold annual Hunger Games in which a boy and girl from each district are forced to compete. In a televised arena each will fight to the death till one remains. When her younger sister is chosen, 16-year-old Katniss volunteers to take her spot knowing it’s a potential death sentence. This is a great read, and keeps you wanting more at the end of each chapter.

Only a true best friend can protect you from your immortal enemies!

In this book there are three different types of Vampires: the Moroi, the royals; the Damphir, half-human half-vampires who are trained to protect the Moroi; and the Strigoi, an immortal bunch of Vampires that kill innocents every day. Lissa Dragomir, a Moroi princess, is the last of her family’s blood line, making her extremely susceptible to the cravings of the Strigoi, who are hell-bent on killing her. Rose Hathaway, Lissa’s best friend, is a Damphir who is just as hell-bent on protecting her. Both girls, who escaped St. Vladamir’s Academy just two years prior, have been caught and dragged back where their world becomes even more dangerous – inside the school gates. I love this book, and if you love Twilight you will love this series as well.

Ezra Faulkner’s supposedly perfect life-tennis star, good grades, rich parents, popular-crumbles in the aftermath of his one tragedy, a hit-and-run car accident that shatters his leg. When he meets Cassidy Thorpe-smart and witty, independent and fun, but still haunted by something from her own past-the two of them join the debate team, encouraged by Ezra’s childhood friend Toby (whose tragedy was catching a severed head on a rollercoaster). Ezra is the kind of guy who thinks but doesn’t always reveal his thoughts, who isn’t afraid to show he cares but also allows others to walk all over him, and who-surprisingly and  wonderfully-has moments of great bravery. I very much enjoyed his journey of figuring out who he wants to be when everything he thought he knew changed.
