Many feared the five-foot-tall Hawaiian cop, Chang Apana, who was infamous for the bullwhip that dangled from his hand. Born in 1871, Apana evolved into an island legend and was catapulted into a pop-culture icon as the legendary Cantonese detective Charlie Chan, as featured in six books by Earl Derr Biggers and over 40 films. Huang examines the evolution of Charlie Chan, notorious for his grammatical difficulties and knack for turning Oriental wisdom into singsong Chinatown blues, as well as Apana's rough-and-tumble career, Hawaii's virulent racism, and the distorted perceptions the fictional Chan created.
