Vroman's Summer Author and Music Series begins with Donna Lethal's Milk of Amnesia. Like many families in Lowell, MA (Jack Kerouac's hometown) in the '60s and '70s, Donna's family was lower middle class and frequently struggling to make ends meet. Starting with Donna's rascally bookie father, ex-nun mother and a brother who's usually behind bars, she introduces readers to a rogues' gallery of uncles, aunts, grandparents and cousins, best friends, classmates and drug pals hovering on the edge of small time crime, alcoholism, drug abuse and general oblivion. Milk of Amnesia's succinct, no-nonsense prose and imagery is hard to shake, inspiring laughter and tears at unexpected moments.
Followed by a live performance from The Shore!
