This book was stunning! When listening to the audiobook, I constantly found myself sitting in my car, having reached my destination but not wanting to turn the car off and stop listening. Emani Santiago is strong and as fiery as the food she cooks. This book is not a cautionary tale on teen pregnancy, nor an idealization of it. Instead, this is a story of a girl juggling growing up, achieving her dreams and raising a daughter she loves to the ends of the earth.

In Sunnybroke, being a cheerleader is a dangerous thing. First, there was the car accident that killed two girls. Then the murders of two more – supposedly by the neighbor next door. Then the suicide of Monica’s sister. It’s now five years later and there are no more cheerleaders in Sunnybrooke. But the danger isn’t over. Monica discovers something – something that could change the story of what happened to those girls. The more she digs, the more she realizes the story is incomplete, and that nothing (and no one) is as it seems.

After the princess, Lady Saren, refuses to marry the dark prince of another land, her father locks her and Dashti (her handmaiden) in a tower. The King hopes that confinement will change his daughter’s mind, but fear of the prince seems to be stronger than her loneliness. As time goes on, however, Dashti must remain strong enough for the both of them, carrying them through multiple hardships and even putting her life on the line in an attempt to save the Eight Realms from destruction.

What happens after you die? Fifteen-year-old Liz finds out after getting hit by a car, that Elsewhere is a lot like the world she used to live in. As Liz learns to accept her death and move on without her family, she opens her eyes to the new opportunities that Elsewhere provides. Soon readers realize that Liz’s family and friends aren’t the only ones who have to learn to move on. A truly original story that gives a new perspective on death.

This book is all about making the best out of a bad situation. For Hugo, it means still going on the cross country train trip that he was supposed to go on with his girlfriend before she dumped him, and for Mae it means a second chance at making a film closer to her heart. Through the pair are mere strangers when they embark, by the end they will learn more about each other and perhaps, more importantly, themselves.

After Will’s older brother is shot and killed, Will’s only thought is revenge. With the Rules of his neighborhood playing like a mantra in his mind, he steps into the elevator with his brother’s gun tucked in the waistband of his jeans. He never expects to be faced with the ghosts of his past. Perhaps these ghosts, however, aren’t here to haunt him but instead just might save his life. Extremely poignant and thoughtful.

The Breakfast Club meets Pretty Little Liars in this author’s debut novel. Five students walk into detention – but only four walk out. When the boy who knew everyone’s secrets dies, the better question is who wouldn’t have done it. Anyone could be a suspect when it looks like everyone has something to lose. This book will have you obsessed and leave you stunned.

What would you do if you got a call from someone who told you that you were going to die today? For Mateo and Rufus, this is exactly what happens. But on their last day, they both find themselves alone until finding each other on the app Last Friend. From there the pair spend their last hours experiencing a lifetime in one day.

Stella Lane finds advanced economics way easier to understand than dating. Kissing is gross and interacting with people is, quite frankly, exhausting. It doesn’t help that Stella has Asperger’s which she tries not to tell people because, in the past, no one ever seems to take it well. But Stella is determined to learn how to be in a relationship, and she’s calling in a professional. But as she learns more about relationships, from kissing (and actually liking it!), to meeting the family, she receives a lesson she never planned for: what it means to fall in love. The diversity in this book makes it a truly heartwarming and refreshing read.

This was one of my favorite books when I was younger! Adding just enough humor, mystery and suspense, Hiaasen creates a fun adventure that makes this story truly unique.

The world has conquered hunger, disease and even death. But without death, there is the problem of overpopulation which is solved with beings called Scythes. This book asks a range of questions from what it means for humanity without a fear of death, to the differences between good and evil.

I scarcely remember a time when I was free. After being trained by a ruthless man to become Adarlan’s Assassin, I was enslaved in a death camp. This book is the epitome of swashbuckling adventure! Monty is all about the pleasures of life: drinking, gambling, partying, women (and men!). But his father is putting a clock on all of this, and when the time runs out he must grow-up and accept his role as heir. So Monty uses the last of his freedom going on one last, extravagant Grand Tour with his best friend (though he wishes they were more) Percy, and his annoying logical sister. However, the Tour quickly goes awry and the group goes from running against time, to running for their lives. The more they get in over their heads, the more Monty questions everything, from the friend he thought he shared no secrets with, to his future. An eighteenth-century adventure full of sarcasm, romance and fun!

This book surprised me. Is it as fluffy and romancey as it looks? Yest. But does it also touch on tough subjects such as dysfunctional parents, being afraid of confrontation, and the complicated process of being ready (whether that be for graduation or going further in relationships)? ABSOLUTELY! Set locally in Burbank, this was a fun and heartbreakingly relatable read.
