Artmaking is about the journey—I am an art explorer.

When I began taking art classes in high school, I became curious about my inner workings. I tried to connect my soul with my intellect and my intellect with my soul, letting that union guide my artistic expressions without “thinking.”  Today, I continue to be guided by play and by my subconscious—a process similar to the surrealist practice of automatic drawing in which the artist frees herself of rational control and self-censorship. The objects and beings that populate my work are born organically there, at the juncture of soul and intellect. Each creation presents a universe with its own meaning that stems from my unconscious mind. Whatever the medium or technique—pastel, mixed media, ink, printmaking—my creative approach is the same: I dig deeply within myself, and without expectations, I play.

I am indebted to many people and events that have influenced the direction of my work since I started drawing at the age of twelve. My first visual art teacher, Lamont Westmoreland, had a profound impact on my life, taking me and my classmates to galleries and introducing us modern art movements, including surrealism from which I discovered the creative genius of Remedios Varo. He taught me to see art in everything and, as a result, there are no boundaries to what inspires me. Whether lighthearted or serious, the images I draw are simply the things I think about.

Of all my muses, I am most awed by nature. The stark contradiction of beauty and cruelty in the natural world is something I strive to replicate in my work. Some people say they just want happy drawings but mine can be scary sometimes. Like nature, life can be scary sometimes.  – Sena Peterson
