Short Story Writing
With Tom Macher
Thursdays, 9/13, 9/20, 10/4, 10/11
(There will be no class on Sept. 27)
5:30pm – 7:30pm
Cost: $275 per person
This is a 6 week course and you will be enrolling in all 6 classes. Space is limited.
Through prompts, workshopping, and line-by-line readings, we will focus on textual analysis of our own work; hone our skills in developing and refining a story; and find solutions to common writing problems: where to begin, edit oneself, and look when something isn’t working. Each student will have the opportunity to present one story for workshop. Each week, we will examine different aspects of a story, always with an eye towards emotional truth, structure, and the beginning, middle, and end.
Instructor: Tom Macher is the author of Halfway (Scribner, 2018), a memoir about living in boys' homes and halfway houses as a teenager. He is a graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop, where he was a teaching-writing fellow, and has received fellowships from the University of Iowa, the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, and the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts. His short fiction has appeared in Day-One, Gulf Coast Review, Hobart, Slice, Bull, and Mississippi Review. He has served on the jury for the Fine Arts Work Center, read applications for the Iowa Writers' Workshop, and taught creative writing at the University of Iowa.
