ABOUT THE BOOKS:

THE FRESH NEW FACE OF GRISELDA - out 10/29/19

A moving coming-of-age novel about one girl's struggles after her parents lose their home, and her journey to find hope in family and friendship, from Jennifer Torres, the author of Stef Soto, Taco Queen.
Griselda "Geez" Zaragoza has a love for beautiful things, like her collection of vintage teacups and the flower garden she and her dad planted in the front yard. But when his business fails, Griselda loses not just her home, but also her confidence and her trust in her unflappable parents.
Tagging along with big sister Maribel, who postponed college for a job selling Alma Cosmetics, Geez dreams up a way to reclaim the life she thinks she lost. If she can sell enough tubes of glistening, glittery Alma lip gloss, she'll win a cash prize that could help jump start her dad's business.
With ups and downs along the way, Geez will discover that beauty isn't just lost or found but made and re-made.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Jennifer Torres is an award-winning writer and the author of three middle-grade novels—The Fresh New Face of Griselda (October 2019), Flor and Miranda Steal the Show (2018), and Stef Soto, Taco Queen (2017)—and the bilingual picture book Finding the Music/Enpos de la música (2015). She grew up in Southern California and started her writing career as a newspaper journalist. You can visit her online at https://jenntorres.com/.

LENGTH & TOPIC OF PRESENTATION

Telling True Stories: Jennifer writes fiction, but all her stories have truth at their hearts. She'll share how the real-life stories she covered as a newspaper reporter, as well as her own experiences growing up, inspired her characters’ journeys. An interactive discussion will inspire students to discover compelling and important stories within their own lives and experiences. Followed by 10 minutes of Q&A. [45-50 minutes; any size group, though 200 or fewer is ideal]

Write a Mini Memoir: Everyone has an important story to tell. Practice sharing yours with dialogue andsensory detail. Students will experience writing as a process, drafting a personal narrative that they will then rework and revise to craft a poem. [45 minutes; up to 30 participants]

SCHOOL TYPE & GRADES

Grades 3-7

DESIRED NUMBER OF STUDENTS

Any size group is fine for the Telling True Stories presentation, though limiting audience size to 200 or fewer usually results in a better experience. For the Mini Memoir activity, groups of 30 or fewer are preferred.

AV/OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Please provide a projector, computer, and screen. For groups of more than 50, please also provide a microphone. Jennifer will bring her presentation on a flash drive.

If possible, please help prepare students for the visit by making the books available in the library or classroom; discussing the books; and/or helping students prepare questions in advance—students really do get so much more out of author visits when they know what—and whom—to expect.

A heartwarming middle grade about family, friendship, and finding your voice (plus, tacos!).

Seventh grader Estefania "Stef" Soto is itching to shake off the onion-and-cilantro embrace of Tia Perla, her family's taco truck. She wants nothing more than for her dad to get a normal job and for Tia Perla to be put out to pasture. It's no fun being known as the "Taco Queen" at school.

But just when new city regulations are proposed, and her family's livelihood is threatened, she will have to become the truck's unlikely champion.

In this fun and multicultural middle grade novel, Stef will embrace her identity and discover what matters most.
