President Francois Mitterand forgets his hat at a Parisian restaurant. A star-struck diner sneaks it off as a souvenir, and for the next two years the hat drifts into the hands of various people who suddenly find themselves doing and saying things they normally wouldn't, their lives forever transformed. This book only took me a few hours to read, but it was so entertaining and well-crafted. I enjoyed the colorful characters, fun twists, and references to 1980's French culture.

I was completely disarmed by the tenderness of this memoir by Windrow, a military historian who recalls his 16 years with a sweet little owl named Mumble. At the same time, Windrow's style is witty and self-deprecating. This book touched my heart and entertained me well.

These cards feature enchanting artwork and one-word themes that are specific but leave plenty of interpretive room. Even if you don't believe in oracles, these are a thought-provoking, positive way to explore different issues. If you do, they are a fun way to be healed and helped by angelic guidance.

Raptor Red: A Novel Cover Image
ISBN: 9780553575613
Availability: Backordered
Published: Bantam - August 1st, 1996

A novel about a dinosaur told from the dinosaur’s point of view. I thought it was a gimmick. Instead, I was fascinated by this story of a female velociraptor from the plains of prehistoric Utah, surviving the elements with her three chicks after losing her mate.

The author, a paleontologist, imagines that these giant creatures of the past were also sentient and felt emotions like playfulness, grief, and affection. We get a glimpse of that inner world as we meet a host of wondrous animals of land and sea, experiencing a day in their lives---from the mundane to the dangerous and even deadly. Yet Bakker doesn’t anthropomorphize them into something “cute” or unrealistic.

We follow Raptor Red through extreme weather, enemy attacks, and the quest for a new mate.  We learn her fears and motives. We watch her chicks grow and even play with them. As we walk the plains, we learn about the struggle for survival that faces every living thing. I found myself sympathizing with every creature I met—even Raptor Red’s foes--and rooting for the protagonist.
